Bat Ponies, also known as batponies or bat-ponies, are a bat-like species of ponies. While their nomenclature differs between sidestories and media, their appearances remain the same; they are characterized by their tufted ears, dragon-like eyes and leathery, bat-like wings. Little is known about them as bat ponies do not make a prominent appearance in Fallout: Equestria. They do, however, appear in several sidestories and in official My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic media.
Depiction in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Comics[]
Bat ponies were first seen in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's Season 2, episode 4: Luna Eclipsed, pulling Princess Luna's chariot on Nightmare Night. Since then, bat ponies have been associated with Luna's Royal Guard ponies, characterized by their bat-like appearance and leathery wings.
Bat ponies also appear in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic IDW comics, again portrayed as members of Princess Luna's Royal Guard.
In Fallout: Equestria[]
Members of Princess Luna's Royal Guard were enchanted with the Royal Canterlot voice, and presumably fought against the Zebras during the Great War. One of these Royal Guard ponies, Lionheart, survived the war as a ghoul and played an important role in the final push against the Grand Pegasus Enclave in Fallout: Equestria.
Notable Bat ponies[]
Lionheart from Fallout: Equestria is the only observed Batpony Ghoul to date.

Appearances of Bat Ponies in Project Horizons |

Fallout: Equestria - Project HorizonsHistoryOrigins Not much is know about Batpony origins. They themselves have two creation theories, one of which states that they were ponies that became trapped in underground caverns. They adapted to the dark underground and eventually emerged on Equestria's surface. Batponies were shunned and feared by regular ponies and they found the bright sunlight painful but the night time perfect for them and eventually met Luna who took them on as personal guards. Another creation myth/theory is that the Batponies were personally created by Luna and Nightmare Moon who turned regular pegasus ponies into batponies. Before the war The batponies were used a soldiers by Nightmare Moon until her defeat. The conflict also caused the death of numerous batponies, who fled back to their cave homes. The batponies emerged when Luna returned, they sent two of their own to serve as guards for her and kept the location of their families and home a secret. During the war The race continued to act as royal bodyguards for Princess Luna during the escalation of the war. Unlike Celestia's royal guard, they tended to operate from the shadows and were also seen covertly monitoring and guarding high ranking officials and working with the O.I.A. After the War The bat ponies survived the war and eventual megaspell apocalypse by retreating to their underground home, later revealed to be Nightmare Castle; a millennium old bastion of Nightmare Moon and the site of Project Redoubt, hidden in a Shadow Realm that overlaps Equestria. Unfortunately, due to their already limited numbers and prolonged isolation, their genetic pool quickly began to dwindle (an issue also present in many Stables) resulting in mass instances of birth defects due to the required inbreeding. TraitsBiology Bat ponies have yellow irises with slitted, dragon-like pupils, suited for nocturnal environments giving them superior night vision. They tend to have have greyscale coats and a set of large bat wings on their back, instead of the typical feathered variety of pegasus ponies. Given that they hunt for prey and have fangs, it can be speculated that they are carnivorous or omnivorous. Due to their prolonged isolation from the other pony species, and their limited numbers, birth defects of various kinds have been observed in a worrying number of the remaining population. Culture Not much is known about batpony culture. What is known is that they have a long history serving under Luna and eventually Nightmare Moon. They have their own language which is described as sounding like chirping and squeaking at the edge of hearing, when they speak amongst themselves or to other ponies. They communicate with non-bat ponies by writing on small chalkboards like Ditzy Doo, or by using enchanted armour or talismans to bring their speech down to lower frequencies. When addressing outsiders or strangers, they tend to use the Royal Canterlot Voice, speaking at high volume in an archaic manner, however this is not the case in their own realm, or when speaking to friends. During a memory of Psalm's, while visiting the Royal Palace during the war, she witnessed Lionheart (then just a regular batpony) being criticized for not using the Royal Canterlot Voice after recognizing the unicorn; he ironically retorts that "nobody talks like that anymore" and that they should save it for the tourists. The remaining population currently reside in Nightmare Castle (an old fortification of Princess Luna's that was built in a shadow realm adjacent to Equestria from the time of her transformation into Nightmare Moon) where they continue to follow the rule of their own monarchy. Abilities Bat ponies are skilled fliers. Their slitted eyes provide them with superior night vision, but poorer eyesight during the day. Bat ponies also have sensitive hearing. They are capable of hearing and speaking in frequencies too high for a standard pony hearing. Many Bat ponies also possess a unique shadow power; examples of these include the Shadow-walk ability that can be employed to teleport over short distances, and the ability to conjure life-destroying dark matter. They also have a sonic scream that can be used to damage sensitive equipment. Notable Bat poniesStygius - A batpony encountered by Blackjack whilst he was out hunting. He took a keen interest in Blackjack and accompanied her to Goldenblood's home where the two had sex. He later met Psychoshy through Blackjack and began a relationship with her. He has the ability to Shadow-walk - a short range teleportation effect - which he makes great use of in combat. Tenebra - Stygius' sister who disapproves of her brothers interactions with outsiders. Despite having no interest in Stallions and being revolted by the concept of incest, she was scheduled to marry her brother due to the approaching genetic death of her species. Supposedly due to earlier inbreeding (with her parents being half-brother and sister) she suffers from Epilepsy and problems with her gait during periods of stress. She has the ability to use shadows to snare and entangle enemies. Hades - The father of Stygius and Tenebra and current king of the Bat ponies. He is a massive, Black-coated Stallion with the 'Oblivion' shadow ability. He has a noticeably grumpy disposition and suffers from frequent migraines. Persephone - Hades' wife and half-sister. She appears to be an albino and is frail, suffering from acute angina. |

Appearances of Bat Ponies in Fallout: Equestria - Tales of Transylvania |
---|
Fallout: Equestria - Tales of TransylvaniaHistoryOrigins Originating in the area known as "Hollow Shades", the race was largely located in the forested area beneath Equestria's capitol Canterlot. However far to the west, just on the other side of the mountains that surrounded Vanhoover, another smaller state of Bat Ponies lived. This heavily forested, and wide spread area was known as Transylvania. The entire race descends from the islands of Braytain, and as such, the ponies all speak in the ways of their ancestors, with Braytish accents and dialects originating from the north central or southern regions of Braytain. Before the war Before the war, Transylvania was the main and sole city of the region. The city was built by a large organization of farming ponies and became a nice little farming town within the forest. During the war During the war, the city saw little action, however they still stepped up to assist in the driving of the economy. With their architecture and medieval atmosphere, they set up a series of festivals and fairs around the region to help improve morale of civilians as well as raise money for the war effort. After the War After the war, the region was spared by not only being an out-of-the-way target, but also by the large mountains that ringed the forest. The ponies who survived quickly set up communities throughout the fairgrounds and started to regain their civilization. Farming began to flourish once more, albeit with some difficulty. TraitsBiology The biology of a bat pony is similar to their cousin races. However, the main differences that they display are small tufts of fur on the ear tips, slatted pupils and golden irises, small fangs in the jaw along side their regular teeth, and leathery "bat" wings. They are a vegetarian race, similar to their cousins and have a preference for fruit. Culture Their culture follows near identically to Equestrian Culture. However the main difference being their reversed time keeping cycle. Since the creatures are naturally nocturnal, they feel the need to sleep during the day, and to be awake during the night. A few words have been changed in their vocabulary, mainly being "Yesterday" turning to "Yesternight" and such as follows. Abilities The bat ponies share a variety of unique abilities involving the passive magic that surrounds the creatures. They have heightened senses, especially on a clear night. Their eyes will give off a faint glow, similar to light reflecting off of gold, when they are in dark places, granting them night vision. Notable Bat poniesNight Shade: the chief engineer behind the Stable that preserved the near entirety of the inhabitants of Transylvania. Scarlet Rose: The "Scarlet Angel" who was depicted in a prophecy. Her destiny is to save the dying race and lead to times of peace and prosperity. |
